Workshop: Rhizosphere 3, Perth (Aus) September 2011
RHIZOSPHERE 3
Perth, September 2011

An understanding of the rhizosphere is central to many ecosystem services and related subjects including plant nutrition, plant health, ecosystem diversity, bioremediation and rehabilitation of degraded land, human pathogen ecology, ecosystem responses to climate change and water quality issues.

The aim of this conference is to provide a multidisciplinary forum for exchanging innovative ideas and methods for studying the rhizosphere, understanding its complexity and further up-scaling its functioning to better evaluate its ultimate role in ecosystem processes.

This conference follows on from the highly successful RHIZOSPHERE 2 Conference held in Montpellier (26-31 August 2007) which gathered over 570 participants from 48 countries worldwide. We aim to repeat this success in Perth and make RHIZOSPHERE conferences a regular event.

The conference will provide a stage for young and established researchers to present their work in front of a welcoming international audience in the beautiful setting of Perth in Western Australia. We therefore welcome everyone who wishes to discover the latest advances in the rhizosphere to Perth in September 2011, during the fabulous wildflower season in Western Australia.

Davey L. Jones (Univ. Wales, UK)
Chair Scientific Steering Committee

Hans Lambers (UWA, Australia)
Chair Local Organising Committe

Rhizosphere 3 International Conference will open for registrations February 2011

8 International Symposium on the Biology of Acinetobacter, Rome 1-3 Sept 2010

The 1st International Symposium on the Biology of Acinetobacter was held in Manchester (UK) in 1986. Subsequent meetings have been held in Paris (FR) 1990, Edinburgh (UK) 1994, Eilat (IL) 1996, Noordwijkerhout (NL) 2000, Dublin (IR) 2004 and Barcelona (ES) 2006. The aim of these meetings is to provide an informal international forum in which to discuss all aspects of the genus Acinetobacter. In particular, it is hoped to stimulate discussion and collaboration between medical and non-medical microbiologists, all of whom deal with this ubiquitous group of organisms in the course of their working lives. The meetings are renowned for their excellent value and for their friendly and informal atmosphere. In particular, they provide an ideal opportunity for students to meet the experts and present their own research work at a not-for-profit international congress which is largely organised by the participants themselves.

The 8th International Symposium on the Biology of Acinetobacter will be held at the University of Roma Tre in the beautiful and historic city of Rome (IT) on 1 – 3 September 2010. Please click on the links provided to obtain further information. We sincerely hope that you will be able to join the rest of the Acinetobacter ‘family’ in Rome and become part of this tradition.

Conference on Probiotics and Prebiotics, Kosice (Slo) 15-17 June 2010

International Scientific Conference on Probiotics and Prebiotics - IPC 2010

The International Probiotic Conference 2010 will be held on 15th - 17th June 2010, in the university city of Kosice, Slovakia. IPC 2010 is the oncoming event of the successful conference series focusing on probiotics in 2000, 2004, and 2008. The scientific programme will focus on current advances in the research, production and use of probiotics and prebiotics with particular focus on their role in maintaining health and preventing diseases.

The conference's goal is to provide a scientific forum for all stakeholders of probiotics and prebiotics and enable the interactive exchange of state-of-the-art knowledge. The conference will focus on evidence-based benefits proven in clinical trials and scientific experiments.

At IPC 2010 leading scientists will present and discuss current advances in the research of probiotics and prebiotics. New scientific evidences that support or question the efficacy of already existing or prospective substances and applications will be conferred. In addition novel strains, controversial but scientifically solid ideas, approaches and visions will be presented as well.

Further to its scientific content, IPC 2010 is a networking event. A unique opportunity to meet all the stakeholders of probiotics and prebiotics. Meet those who influenced the past, influence the present and most importantly will enable the future of probiotics and prebiotics by means of basic research, clinical trials, regulatory efforts or development of industrial technology. Initiation of cross-boarder co-operations between scientists and institutions will be also facilitated.

Evolutionary Biology Workshop in the Alps, 20-26 June 2010, Arolla (Swi)

Evolutionary Biology Workshop in the Alps

20 - 26 June, Arolla, Switzerland

Faculty:
David Haig (Harvard University)
John Pannell (University of Oxford)
Jerome Goudet (University of Lausanne)
Tadeusz Kawecki (University of Lausanne)

Target participants: PhD students, advanced master students
This workshop, based on a concept developed by Steve Stearns and John Maynard Smith, takes place in a small Alpine village (Arolla), which will allow you to focus while being able to enjoy the landscape and the Alpine flora.
The main goals of this course are to develop the following skills: developing your scientific ideas through discussions in groups, thinking critically and expressing oneself clearly, turning a general idea into a research project, writing a research proposal and defending it.
It is you, the students, who will be in charge in this course. You will be divided in groups of 4-5 students. In those groups, you will work on your ideas. You, as a group, will decide what the important questions in broadly defined evolutionary biology are, you will choose one, and attempt to develop a proposal for a research project that will address it. The faculty will visit the groups during the discussions to answer your questions, provide coaching and give you feedback on your projects, but they will generally take the back seat. Additionally, the faculty will give informal talks about their research and be available for  discussion with individual students. At the end you will present your projects to other participants, and we will party.

Costs: CHF 420.- for room and board.

More information at the course webpage.

To apply, send a single file (pdf or rtf) containing a short motivation letter, a cv and the name of your scientific advisor to tadeusz.kawecki@unil.ch.

Deadline for application: March 1, 2010
