The technology is there and the THEORY is in PLACE, making this a very EXCITING TIME to be a student of MICROBIAL diversity! Carlos Pedrós-Alió, Science 01/2007
SItEMICRO second course in Rome: Well done !
The 2nd SItEMICRO course was finally done at the Water Research Institute (IRSA-CNR). We all have enjoyed the time during the talks of the international guests and above all the time spent in the laboratory. Luckily, the weather was nice, allowing both students and speakers to enjoy the sunsets over the city and the sampling excursion in the countryside.
The course was mainly focussing on two techniques: CARD-FISH with lectures held by Stefano Fazi and the IRSA staff, and DGGE with lectures held by Luigi Michaud and Manuela Coci. Both methodologies were thoroughly discussed and applied step by step by the 24 participants during the laboratory activities. There was also a short introduction to the software ARB and its potential applications, held by Jakob Pernthaler and Emilio O. Casamayor, as well as a practical demonstration of the new flow cytometer A50-Micro (Apogee Flow Systems). From the questionnaire sent to the participants, we can just preliminary say that the course was successful, since most of the feedbacks were so far positive about the organization, the participation of international speakers and the quality of teaching staff in general. Some critic points have emerged and they will be the starting points to improve the didactic purposes of the upcoming courses. All participant’s feedbacks and part of the didactic material will be soon published in the SItEMICRO website…so keep tuned!
Annual EMi Lecture 2009: tocca a Edward F. De Long
XX Italian Congress of Ecology (S.It.E. Congress) in September in Rome (again)
From the 27th to the 30th of September, the XX Italian Congress of Ecology will be held in Rome, hosted by La Sapienza University. As always the Congress is organized in plenaries from worldwide famous ecologists and parallel sessions in specific topic. The traditional session of Microbial Ecology will surely be (as always) one of the most interesting and crowded, so dont miss it! Moreover, within the international guests present in Rome, some of them are related to the microbial ecology world, and the Congress will be a great opportunity to share insights with them: Stuart Pimm, Alan Hildrew, and many others! So visit the webpage of the Congress and see you in Rome (again) in September!

Ancora tagli alla ricerca: tocca alla Repubblica Ceca
Our Czech colleagues are facing a government determined to drastically cut funding for basic research including microbial ecology, in favour of applied research and industry. As highlighted in a recent issue of Nature, the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic and Czech academic research as a whole is endangered by planned severe cuts in funding, reaching up to 50% in 2012. If you have benefited from the resurgence of Czech science in the international literature, or you simply feel that this issue is one that concerns us all, please take a moment to find out more and perhaps add your signature to a petition in support of our colleagues by clicking HERE.
